As I started my final I was still unsure of the exact colors I wanted to use on my piece. I knew I wanted to use the design I created and I wanted to use red for the center area. I decided to start with these places first. I measured the ratio the board to the paper as two to one so everything in my sketch has to be doubled in size I used a ruler to make sure all my lines were perfectly straight and in proportion. The thickness of the different lines represents the pitch of the notes being played for that part. The next day I painted the red area I had to do two coats to make the red an even tone without any canvas poking through. I then started on the top part I put yellow down then I decided I wanted it to blend down like a flowing color like the violin part so I blended from yellow to orange. To contrast this and provide some extra chaos to the part I put down a light blue paint next to it. Then I splattered tiny dots on top. For the bottom I chose to use a royal blue and a dark purple do show how dark, low and rich the piano chords are the yellow spots represent the banging popping out cords the piano player has.

For my second draft I wanted to keep the red stair like design going through the middle of my paper. This represented the violin run very well I thought and it was the only thing I really liked about my first draft. For the bottom part I wanted the same dark colors the royal blue with the dark purple background. I felt like these colors represented the darkness and richness of the piano cords. For the design I made a blocky structure coming out of the bottom side of the page with one block floating above representing the highest note played by the piano. I then added some splotches of brown to show the banging on the piano chords. On the top part I did the same idea as the bottom a sideways block structure but I made the blocks thinner to show that the notes of the violin part were quick. The colors I decided to use is a golden yellow for the block like thing a white background and light yellow splatters all over to show the chaos of the part.

I chose a fiddling song for my final it has a high chaotic violin part with a heavily corded piano part underneath. The name of the song is Wizard Walk so I can also throw a bit of a magical feeling into my painting. There is one particular violin run which moves up the violin in a stair like form so I represent this by a almost stair like formation dividing my paper in half diagonally from the bottom left hand corner to the upper right I want this to be red. I then focused on the piano part I decided to put this on the lower part of my paper because it goes under the violin part I decided to do another block formation which would be blue swimming in a background color of dark purple to show the heaviness and darkness of the piano with large brown stops for the cords. The upper part would be a sweeping kind of line in yellow to show the flowing violin part with an orange background.

Our last project of the year is to paint a song we will be doing this on an 18 by 24 canvass with acrylic paint. To get us prepared for this project my teacher had us spend one day where we listed to songs he played and then used water color to create a painting for that song. The rules are no distinct images, it must be an abstract, and it must represent the song well. The first paintings I created on our trial runs were pretty ugly and bad they looked like a 5 year old went crazy with the finger paint. However after a few songs they started to get better and I am going to include my final painting from that day in this post.

When I started my final I decided to change my colors and keep my design I had started to create my multi color background however it did not work out how I wanted it too I decided to start over. My mother had recently painted her office light purple with a reddish purple. I decided to take this idea and start with a light purple background and a dark purple strip at the bottom for the ground. I then painted the black trunk I then put on two layers of red paint for the top of the tree on the front branches I made the color go lighter red as it reached the tips then for the branches behind the tree I mixed a dark red I then placed a layer of white on top for snow and then proceeded to do my dots. I think I could have taken more time with the dots I think I went a bit overboard and put on too many which started to make the tree look flat  again and I wished I had mixed the colors of the dots more instead of just placing layers of colors on top of each other.

For my second draft I wanted to take inspiration from one of Iyvind Earle’s paintings not just his techniques he had done a painting of just one tree which was kind of spooky looking with an olive green background and snow on top. I started by drawing the trunk as a very basic shape then creating some strange angles on it so I could have an interesting way to place the dots. After this I drew the branches of the tree. Instead of making these dead like in Iyvind Earle’s painting I decided to make them look like a swampy kind of weeping willow so you saw no branches only the leaves which hung down creepily the final thing I added was the snow. I want a multi color background which is well blended a dark blue ground a black trunk and a blue top of the tree with white snow and dots on the trunk.

For my first draft I want to try to do a painting similar to the most well known kinds of Iyvind Earle paintings which would be his landscape paintings. To start my draft I drew a line that would be used as the divider between the sky and land. After I did this I placed a cliff in front of my horizon line on the right side I then added lines that went out from a focus point such as the ones used in one point perspective to show depth. These would become a lighter color like Iyvind Earle uses in his paintings. In front of both of these I placed a tree which is the common motif in all of his painting I did a branch which hangs down from the top of my page to about the middle and on this I will place the dots to show movement and twisting of the trunk. I am also going to place dots on the hill to show the different ledges and rocks.  The background sky will be red orange and yellow and the ground will be a light green with a darker green shadow for the cliff the cliff will be a medium grey and the tree will be black the lines on the ground will be a yellow the dots will be multi colored.

Our next project for art and design will be a painting in the style of Iyvind Earle. He uses many solid colored backgrounds or a blended background then adds a horizon line and mostly black areas for trees. When he has all these basic flat shapes painted in he then adds layers of colorful dots to create the depth and movement in his piece. He normally will paint a landscape and he sometimes will do a single tree. In a previous art class we had a similar assignment which was to copy one of his paintings however this time we get to create our own which is inspired by his style. To do this we will need to use certain techniques such as working with lighter colors to darker colors then working with very large unspecific shapes to very detailed dots.

After I had transferred by design I carved out the letters, top of the dress, and the clothes line on one side of the block the other side I left blank. I then did a test print to make sure my craving was done and deep enough then I adjusted a few letters and it worked very well. After that I started to experiment with different colors I would lay down the blank side first with a lighter color then I would let that dry then I would lay down a darker color on the side with the design on it. This would cause the dress to show up in the light color with a dark background. I tried to use very different or contrasting colors in my prints. The last thing I did is bring in a few shirts and create my own tank tops and t shirts with my prints on them. These are super cool and I wear them a ton!

For my second draft I decided to use a different song completely I chose Jason Mraz’s Beautiful Mess which instantly clicked with the idea to do a long full flowing ball gown dress hanging from a clothes line with the lyrics in the skirt. This image came from the lyric “and we tore our dresses and stained our shirts but it’s nice today oh the wait was so worth it”. Since we r making a block print I wanted the design to be pretty simple and only have the letters as a complex part. I took my favorite bits and pieces from the lyrics to put in the skirt. I started by drawing my design on a piece of paper then I traced over it with a very soft graphite pencil. After this I flipped the drawing onto the block and pressed down to transfer the print to the block. Then I traced the transfer on the block to see it better. After this I started with the carving.
